Problem

Picture a four-sided shape drawn on a flat piece of paper. The four corners are called vertices.

We want to know: is there a single point on the paper that is the same distance away from all four corners?

Here are five kinds of four-sided shapes to check:

  • a square
  • a rectangle that is not a square
  • a rhombus that is not a square
  • a parallelogram that is not a rectangle or a rhombus
  • an isosceles trapezoid that is not a parallelogram

For how many of these five shapes can you find such a point?
