Problem

Picture a square pattern of small tiles. It has 88 black tiles and 1717 white tiles.

Now wrap one more layer of black tiles all the way around the outside.

In the new, bigger square, what is the ratio of black tiles to white tiles?

The original 5×5 pattern (8 black tiles, 17 white tiles) wrapped by a new black border — count the tiles in the new border to find the ratio.

Original 5x5 + new outer border = 7x7 red outline = original 5x5 white tiles 1 center + 16 ring = 17 original black ring 3 x 3 minus 1 x 1 = 8 NEW black border count these tiles! new square is 7 x 7 side: 5 + 2 = 7 ratio to find: black : white = ? : ?
