Problem

Pick any two whole numbers and call them nn and mm. (They can be the same number, or different.)

Square each one and add them: n2+m2n^2+m^2.

You are told that this sum, n2+m2n^2+m^2, comes out even.

Look at the four statements below. Three of them could happen. One of them cannot ever happen. Which one is impossible?

Pick an answer.

(A)
n and m are even
(B)
n and m are odd
(C)
n+m is even
(D)
n+m is odd
(E)
none of these are impossible
